Tableland
Rugby Union Club Inc
Be Humble in play, Strong in attack & Solid in defence
The Hilanders are the only Rugby Union Club based in the tablelands region and are currently competing in the FNQ Rugby competition. The team has been in the FNQ competition for the last 29 years and have competed in both Premier and First Division competitions, semi finals & grand finals and have solidified a position in the FNQ competition as a competitive and worthy team to play against. Even though we are based in Atherton we cover the tablelands region including Milla Milla, Mt Garnet, Dimbulah & Mareeba. Our home ground is based on Evans Street in Atherton and we are the only club in the competition with our own clubhouse. In 28 seasons of the FNQ competition the club has developed a number of Cairns Thunder Players whom have proceeded to a state competition level. The club’s major focus is on development of players from its junior and senior teams.
The club first fielded a Senior team in the competition in 1987 and the Junior teams in the FNQJRU competition in 1990. 2007 saw the club celebrate 20 years of Senior Rugby in the FNQ competition and 17 years of Juniors competing in the FNQ Juniors competition. The senior season is played from March through to September and the junior season plays a short season towards the end of the year.
We are a club highly committed to promoting rugby union in the FNQ region, our major focus is based around our players, volunteers and supporters having an enjoyable time whilst being able to get behind a local sports club. We are a family freindly club and our playing field is surrounded by a 600m long by 5m wide bitumen track. the track is suitable for bicycles, prams, skates, walkers & tricycles.
One of the most exicitng events coming up is the 7's Rugby being introduced to the olympic games in 2016. In response to this the FNQ teams hold a round robin style one day competition in early March to promote the 7's Competition. In 2014 the event was held by the Port Douglas Reef Raiders and was marked as a big success.
The Hilanders Rugby Union Club welcomes prospective players, coaches, volunteers and supporters at all times both in season and during the break. If you are interested in helping out please contact our President or vice president. All information required to contact us is on the contact us page.
We hope to see you at the games this year showing your support for your local clubs.
